Apparently, her ability to sense vibrations had improved, which may be how she was able to produce the very fine details of the city and did not show the same helplessness she had shown when previously walking on sand when the gang stepped onto the beach.
Toph also expressed an aversion for flying [2] and submarine travel, [33] as she could not sense her surroundings without her feet on solid ground. Also, as a result of her closeness or affinity with earth, Toph could rest or sleep comfortably on solid rock without any sleeping bag or blanket and could walk on any kind of terrain in bare feet, a standard trait for earthbenders.
Toph relied on direct contact between her feet and the ground for "sight" [30] as well as for her earthbending. Toph was very reluctant to allow anyone else to touch her feet, [25] probably because insensitive handling there would make her deaf to other vibrations and thereby render her helpless and because they were far more sensitive than other people's feet.
Despite her substantial prowess on land, Toph did not perform well in water and on ice. She seemed incapable of seeing where she was going on ice, was not able to swim, [3] and became nauseous when she needed to travel by submarine in the invasion of the Fire Nation. In Ba Sing Se, Toph demonstrated an ability to sense even slight vibrations, informing a man they met that she could feel him shaking.
Toph's earthbending style was based on Chu Gar Southern Praying Mantis, which is a style that is apparently unique to her; the style of earthbending used by other earthbenders is rooted in the Hung Gar style of Kung Fu. She was the only bender known to use a style based on a different root martial art than the standard for their bending art. This may be because she was self-taught rather than trained in the traditional earthbending form. Toph came to develop her unique style by observing the movements of the also blind earthbending badgermoles that could be found in the caves around her hometown.
Toph demonstrated to Aang her practice of sandbending. Because sand is loose and ultimately always changing with the winds of the desert, Toph found it hard to navigate through and control. To compensate somewhat, she could condense the sand together to give her a better footing. However, when she tried to attack one of the sandbenders with a small wave of sand during their ambush of her and Appa, she missed, her lack of precision on the sand aggravated by her hurry to save both Appa and the others.
After the events in the Si Wong Desert had shown her inability to see effectively while walking on sand, [23] Toph practiced her sandbending, eventually achieving a mastery over it that allowed her to create an extremely detailed sand version of Ba Sing Se during her time relaxing at Ember Island. A fluid earthbending master, Toph mastered metalbending to the level she could use it as systematically as earth itself. Toph discovered the ability to bend metal in the spring of AG.
Metal is derived from ore, which is found in the earth. Guru Pathik explained to Aang that "metal is just a part of earth that has been purified and refined". Because of Toph's ability to feel the vibrations in earth, she was able to locate the impurities the small fragments of earth still found in most metals and manipulate them to "bend" the metal portion.
By acquiring these metalbending abilities, Toph had shown herself to be one of the most powerful and ingenious earthbenders in the world, being the only known earthbender to ever bend metal during the Hundred Year War, a feat that even the Avatar was unable to perform since the origin of earthbending.
When Sokka finished his training as a swordmaster, he gave Toph a small piece of meteorite, which, being composed of earth and metal, she could easily mold into a myriad of shapes, [60] subsequently transforming it into an arm bracelet which she would wear.
She originally used an underdeveloped form of metalbending and usually needed to have direct contact with the element to manipulate it at all, let alone skillfully. However, she continued to practice her metalbending and started to display a dexterous control over metal.
In Wulong Forest , when she was breaking into a Fire Nation airship, it was shown that her metalbending had improved greatly, as she created metal armor and manipulated the metallic structure of the room with far more ease than before, moving metal more fluidly.
She was also able to crawl along the metal ceiling while completely covered in metal. Additionally, Toph could metalbend outside of her metal armor, even though she was already bending the armor in the first place. A year later, Toph could bend metal that she was not in contact with, like when she demonstrated her ability to bend metal to Kunyo , who was trying to take over the metalbending school , by bending a metal weapon around his head.
She later stated that as long as someone could see the metal, she could bend it, which she demonstrated when metalbending screws and bolts to unscrew the wheels of Fire Nation tanks. Toph later taught this self-invented technique to many earthbenders, including her daughters. After the Hundred Year War, Toph further refined metalbending to the point of being able to start and lead a capable law enforcement group of metalbending police officers. Following Toph's retirement, Lin Beifong became the new Chief of Police, demonstrating her prodigious metalbending and leadership abilities.
Despite all of her accomplishments in the development of metalbending, Toph never succeeded in bending pure metals such as platinum.
Despite her lack of actual sight, her remaining senses, primarily her sense of touch and hearing, were especially acute, allowing her to use her seismic sense to remarkable levels. With the latter sense, she once claimed herself that she "never [forgot] a voice". This was shown when the gang traveled through the Si Wong Desert, where they were confronted by a group of sandbenders and she almost immediately recognized one as one of the sandbenders that kidnapped Appa the day before.
Toph overheard the captain whispering to his troops to sink the ship and attacked. Toph also showed a decent amount of artistic talent, as she was able to create a realistic replica of the city of Ba Sing Se with sandbending while Team Avatar stayed at Ember Island, contrasting with Sokka's poor sculpting abilities when he created a sand sculpture of Suki.
Later in a training exercise involving all of the members of the team, she was able to create earthbending mannequins while acting as the "Melon Lord" [6] who was, in reality, an inanimate mannequin made to resemble the Fire Lord, supported by a small earth column and clothed in Fire Nation robes. As befits one who has mastered the use of neutral jing by waiting and listening to the earth, Toph had a great sense of hearing, able to clearly hear the most subtle of whispering from considerable distances and could recognize people by the sound of their voices.
In the Si Wong Desert, Toph recognized the sandbender who stole Appa, remarking as she did so that she never forgets a voice. She also seemed to enjoy acting and showed a decent amount of talent at it, getting more into character as the "Melon Lord" than was necessary for Team Avatar's training purposes, [6] rebuffing Katara for acting out of character when Aang distracted her from their act of being noblewomen as was made necessary for entry into the Earth King's party [4] , and reveling in the "stage name" given to her as "The Runaway".
She also displayed a remarkable amount of agility for one who preferred to have her feet planted on the ground at all times. In Team Avatar's first battle with Combustion Man, she rolled, pushed herself off of the ground with one hand and flipped over in the air to regain her balance after his first shot. She positioned herself in an earthbending stance in order to fight back against her attacker as quickly as possible.
Toph was initially designed as a jock-type, bad-mouthing, muscular, sixteen-year-old boy [68] who would act as a foil to Sokka's nerdiness, [69] as revealed by the co-creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko during an interview with Toon Zone. Later on, when the time came closer to the character's debut, the creators pitched about the humor behind a little girl being able to take on all the strong, buff earthbenders, an idea introduced by head writer Aaron Ehasz that was initially rejected by co-creator Konietzko.
From this idea which blossomed as a joke and after long discussions, Toph was given her gender and turned into the character that was introduced in the show, ironically becoming one of Bryan's favorite characters.
A joke about the prototype later appeared as the actor playing Toph in The Boy in the Iceberg play bore a closer resemblance to the initial design. Avatar Wiki Explore. Latest news.

Earthbending master, professional earthbending fighter formerly , con artist formerly , Chief of Police of Republic City formerly. Avatar: The Last Airbender. Only after an insightful talk with Katara about earth being his natural opposite element did Aang start thinking positively.
Later, when he was forced to confront a ferocious saber-tooth moose lion in order to protect trapped Sokka, Aang finally stood his ground and learned to think like an earthbender. It was revealed that Toph had been observing all the while and after Aang proved his new toughness by taking back his staff and moving a boulder, Toph finally and proudly proclaimed him an earthbender.
Toph often referred to Aang as "Twinkle Toes", which was likely out of friendly humor rather than insult. The nickname originated from Aang's hovering when they fought. She commented that he was "light on his feet" and asked if his tournament nickname was "The Fancy Dancer". Aang and Toph's relationship was quite strained at times.
Toph's hardheaded nature clashed with Aang's on several occasions, particularly over the subject of Appa. A tired Toph, weary of going days without sleep, blamed Appa's shedding as the reason they could not shake their mysterious pursuers. Although she was right, Aang immediately jumped to Appa's defense, which resulted in Toph abandoning the group for a short time.
Only Katara was able to reason with him, reminding Aang that Toph had still managed to save the rest of the group even if it was at the cost of losing Appa. They appeared to get along much better as time went on. Later, Aang referred to everyone, including Toph, as his family. Due to the fact that he was deep in meditation with Roku , Aang did not seem to immediately realize that she had returned; however, once they had landed, he greeted her with a hug just as Katara and Sokka had, a matter made slightly difficult by the fact that he had clearly outgrown Toph during the last year compensated by his bending down and her standing on the tips of her toes during the hug.
During the arrest of Yakone , Toph still appears to call the Avatar by the nickname "Twinkle Toes", despite his complaints that he was forty years old, which he considered to be "too old for nicknames". Toph and Appa. Toph hated and feared flying, as it rendered her truly blind and severed her connection to the earth; at best, she seemed rather bored and restless while flying on Appa. This was emphasized when she claimed to have spotted the titular library from Appa's back, only to remind her friends that she was blind.
Toph expressed dislike toward Appa when she angrily pointed out that Appa's shedding left a large trail that allowed Azula to find them no matter how far or fast they flew. Toph tried her best, however, to protect Appa from being stolen by sandbenders. She was unable to fight her hardest, since she was preoccupied with keeping Aang, Katara, and Sokka's only exit from an ancient library from falling into sand, which curtailed her abilities. This caused her to fail in protecting Appa, something she tearfully apologized to the bison for under her breath as he was dragged away.
Toph, along with everyone else, was overjoyed to see Appa again when he returned to the group at Lake Laogai. Toph and the badgermoles. Toph harbored great respect and sympathy toward these creatures. When she was younger, she ran away from home and met these giant earthbenders in a cave. She recognized herself in them, as she understood their blindness. They showed her affection as well and ultimately taught her earthbending, most notably their unique way of sensing their surroundings to be able to see.
The badgermoles were Toph's true masters and for this reason, she showed respect while discussing them. Bolin had come to idolize Toph as the discoverer of metalbending and one of the greatest earthbenders in history. Toph met Bolin when she met up with Lin and Opal on their mission to rescue the rest of Suyin's family.
Toph was skeptical of Bolin's eager attitude and formed a rather negative impression of him when she learned that he had once worked for Kuvira, especially for her granddaughter's boyfriend. However, Toph did begin to warm up to Bolin during their journey. While they camped, she declared that she could have taught him to metalbend at her academy, and while Bolin was somewhat embarassed of his inability to do so, Toph was impressed when he revealed that he could lavabend.
The following day, they worked together with Lin to rescue the Beifong family. By the end of the journey, Toph and Bolin had an amicable relationship, but he could still irritate her: When Toph was saying farewell to her daughters, Bolin interrupted the heartwarming moment, and Toph wished the rest of her family a safe journey back with the "gumflapper". Iroh and Toph. Toph met Iroh in an Earth Kingdom forest when she temporarily separated from Aang, Sokka and Katara after having an argument.
Although she had heard stories about the exploits of the Dragon of the West, [31] she was not aware she was talking to him. The two sat around a fire which Iroh used to make tea and engaged in conversation, although neither indicated their purpose for traveling or the identities of their relations. Iroh noted that Toph was similar to his nephew in the sense that they both tried to do too much by themselves.
He commented that there was nothing wrong with needing help and sometimes people offer help because they want, not because they believe the other person is incapable. Toph thanked him for the advice and suggested that Iroh tell his nephew how much he means to him. Iroh's attention was diverted from Azula when he noticed Toph's presence and her association with Aang, Sokka and Katara.
Taking advantage of his lack of focus on her, Azula wounded Iroh with a blast of fire before successfully fleeing. Toph showed particular concern for her new friend, but left him after Zuko violently demanded that she and the others leave. Toph referred back to her meeting with Iroh in order to reassure Zuko about Iroh forgiving him. She said that Iroh's constant talk about Zuko was "kind of annoying" but "very sweet".
Toph and Katara arguing. Katara had shown great sympathy for Toph over her restricted life under her parents. Like Aang and Sokka, Katara gladly welcomed Toph into their group. Toph, at one point, referred insultingly to Katara as "Sugar Queen".
However, over time, they reached better terms with each other. Katara and Toph's relationship is often thought of as an older and younger sister bond.
Later, Katara and Toph got makeovers together and the usually self-confident Toph felt down about her looks after a group of pompous girls made rude comments about her. She still felt hurt, even after she earthbent them into a river, and Katara waterbent them away.
Katara managed to cheer her up by expressing her admiration for the fact she did not usually care about other people's opinion about her, for which she was rewarded with a friendly, and unintentionally painful, punch in the arm. Katara comforting Toph. The two were in conflict a second time when Toph accused Katara of being overbearing and "motherly". Katara claimed Toph was acting this way because of her parents and because she was feeling guilty about running away.
This made Toph exceptionally angry. She did, however, admit in a private conversation with Sokka, which Katara overheard, that Katara's motherly ways could be good sometimes.
The pair made up when Toph confessed to Katara that the real reason she was so angry when Katara accused her of acting out was because she was feeling guilty about her parents, thereby proving the fact that Katara was indeed correct. Toph had nicknames for Katara which included "Sugar Queen", [16] "Madame Fussy Britches", [9] and "Sweetness", [26] which linked to Katara's motherly nature and habits. She had used them to insult her whenever they were arguing. Toph helped Korra to overcome her fears.
Toph found an unconscious Korra in the Foggy Swamp in AG and, having recognized her as the Avatar, took her back to her dwelling. As the young woman awoke, Toph addressed her by the nickname she gave Aang, "Twinkle Toes". Despite this, Toph agreed to help train Korra, which meant that she thoroughly enjoyed smacking her around, showing no sensitivity in her methods and flat-out pointing out her mistakes in combat.
Toph tried to remove them, though gave up after Korra subconsciously fought her on it twice, telling the Avatar that she would have to remove it herself. Believing Korra to be disconnected from those she loved and herself, Toph took the Avatar to the banyan-grove tree , where Korra re-established her connection to her surroundings. When Korra followed up on Toph's teachings and advice by bending the metal traces out of her body, the earthbender allowed the Avatar to hug her, noting that she had earned that.
Toph and Momo. Although Toph and Momo barely interacted, they did have a friendly relationship. She was also comfortable with letting him eat nuts out of her hand and ride away on her shoulder while training Aang. Toph and Suki. While navigating the Serpent's Pass, Aang, Katara, Sokka, Toph, and Suki, along with Than and his family, arrived at a section which was completely submerged underneath the water. Initially discouraged, the group was brought together as Katara instructed everyone to form a single-file line as she parted the water, allowing them to walk the path.
Aang aided her in creating a bubble in which they could walk. Momo jumped into the water, seeking to catch fish when something large suddenly swam by. The bubble was burst by the creature and Toph was forced to earthbend the floor of the path above the waterline. The serpent circled them before showing itself, revealing the origin of the name, the "Serpent's Pass". Aang told Katara to guide the others to safety while he distracted the serpent. Katara created an ice bridge for the others to cross before heading out to assist Aang.
Sokka encouraged Toph to cross the ice, but midway through her progress along the bridge, the serpent smashed the pathway, sending Toph into the water. Sokka immediately alerted that he was coming for her and started to undress in order to swim out and save her but Suki was quicker and rescued Toph. Toph, however, thinking it was Sokka, kissed Suki after being brought to the surface.
When she realized this, an embarrassed Toph said, "You can go ahead and let me drown now. Suki, Toph and Sokka joined together in an attempt to prevent the Fire Nation airship fleet from destroying the Earth Kingdom. Sokka and Toph each invented nicknames for Ozai like "Loser Lord" and "Phoenix King of getting his butt whooped", respectively.
Suki tried her hand at the game but could only come up with "King of the guys who don't win? Toph was familiar with Tenzin as he grew up, although she still adopted a no-nonsense attitude toward him when she was on police business.
After he went to apprehend some vandals who damaged airbending gates on Air Temple Island, she used it as an opportunity to explain that he should have reported the crime instead of taking the matters into his own hands. However, she was content to let Tenzin off with just a warning.
Toph and The Duke. Toph had a friendly relationship with The Duke. The two met while Aang was still unconscious from Azula's attack. However, there is no indication she thought of him romantically in any way. It's never mentioned that he had any children, who would have been cousins to Aang and Katara's three kids , so it's assumed that he didn't. Still, the lack of details has left plenty of room for speculation. It's easy to understand why some Avatar: The Last Airbender fans think Toph and Sokka would have been a perfect match.
Both of Sokka's canon love interests were powerful women: Yue, princess of the Northern Water Tribe, who sacrificed her mortal life in order to protect the city; and Suki, the leader of the Kyoshi Warriors.
Toph and Sokka also shared several close bonding moments. For example, Toph had a treasured bracelet made from the same meteorite that Sokka used to forge his sword. The two of them fought side-by-side in the final battle against Fire Lord Ozai, and Sokka shielded Toph's body with his own when it seemed like they were about to die.
