It's okay I guess This book is not that good. The only thing that stopped me from returning it, was the fact that I am the kind of person who doesn't like to leave a character's story until I know what happens. Also, every book except the last one ends in a cliff hanger. This made me keep reading. It has three major plot twists in the last book and that's the most interesting thing. I don't mean the Twilight vegetarian vampire Twilight sucks, long live Harry Potter ; I mean she actually eats fruits and vegetables You read it and find out for yourself.
I would recommend it if you are bored and want to kill time. Try listening to the audiobooks! This title contains: Educational Value. Had useful details. Kid, 10 years old May 28, Mythology and More The book had a great perspective on all types of mythology, and an interesting idea that all religions are one but the gods are interpreted differently. I thought this idea was great, but Mr.
Scott needed to give more background on the teacher, Nicholas Flamel, and his wife, Perenelle. I also liked that right at the beginning there was a big action scene in the book, and it got me hooked into the story. It was creative, the way Mr. Some things needed improvement like the idea that Sophie learns the magic of air in two minutes? I would say that if you like mythology, fantasy, and magic you would like this book. Helped me decide. Teen, 15 years old Written by Curiouscat5 March 16, Kid, 12 years old May 6, It follows up on The Harry Potter series, and is based on true events.
Michael Scott does a fantastic job mixing myths and reality to create a fun-filled, action-packed book.
I have just finished the second-last-book and it was fantastic! Teen, 15 years old Written by SlightlyCynical September 5, Deceptive and Ridiculous This book looked both interesting and informative, so I picked it up at my local Barnes and Noble with the intent of having a relaxing few days to chill out and just read before school started. The day I began reading, I noticed Mr. Scott obviously had a problem trying to incorporate humor into an action book, and I found myself struggling to read past page 70, constantly hoping it would get better.
Actually, I find it positively insulting to Mrs. Jo Rowling that this book and the following is being equated to the incomparable Harry Potter series. Props only for the original idea. This is an unusually needlessly complicated story line. Quite frankly, I'm surprised and offended The Alchemyst is on a high school reading list. Please save yourself some pain and don't read this headache of a story. Teen, 16 years old Written by justonemorechapter January 24, My review spoiler free Ok, so I read this when I was 12, and i loved it.
If you're looking for a fast-paced book based on a single mythology, this isn't it. This book says that the gods from all the mythology are actually called Elders, and they are just powerful beings. The series focuses on Nicholas and Perenelle Flamel search them, they're real. It is slow at some parts, but it's worth it. This title contains: Positive Messages. Read my mind. Teen, 16 years old Written by LadyMoon April 23, A perfect Mix This book in my own opinion is a very good book. Read my mind 1.
Adult Written by GoldSlinger March 6, From an English Major I've spent hours pouring over books, analyzing and critiquing them and the content within, as well as the messages they may contain, however subliminal they may be.
This series is a great one for kids, granted they should be old enough to appreciate the historical context and mythologies mixed within. I know many of the reviews for this have said there is no positive message, but I would argue that they need to take a deeper look.
What reader wasn't upset by the bad choices made by good characters? What reader doesn't want the good to triumph. Yes, these themes are used in a lot of books, but the way Mr. Scott represents them in this series is a breath of fresh air, that also leads to the reader asking deeper questions, such as "when is it o. I would highly recommend this book series, especially over many of the more commonly read books kids are reading today excepting The Hunger Games, Harry Potter, A Series of Unfortunate Events, etc.
Positive Messages. Positive role models. Helped me decide 1. Read my mind. Parent of a 1, 9, and year-old Written by GoodyGoody1 February 6, Great for advanced readers 10 to 99 yrs old! We LOVE these series! My 10 year old girl has read the first 3 books, and is getting started on book 4, so does my husband who is hooked to the series too! We enjoy the way the Author writes, the flow of thoughts, it's a very peasant book to read.. We liked this books better than Fablehaven, which is a very good read too!
Lot's of fast paced adventures, Magic, interesting characters, twists and turns, it is a page turner! This title contains: Consumerism. Adult Written by Marie Ford September 8, Not the Alchemist by Paulo Coelho I actually ordered this book on accident. I was ordering The Alchemyst by Paulo Coelho for a high school summer reading list. I didn't pay attention and ordered The Alchemyst and decided to read it to my 11 year old.
It's okay. Nothing outstanding to me, but it has engaged my 11 year old who is a big mythology fan. Utter rubbish. Honestly, if you want historical accuracy of the ancient gods do NOT set this book down in front of your kid. I know quite a bit about the old gods of Ireland and the descriptions and actions could not be more horribly inaccurate than they are here. If you want a book on gods, pick up a better book.
Was pretty disappointed in the series as a whole. Adult Written by April G. September 11, I am on book six I really like this series. While escaping, they encounter Dee, and witness the power of the ancient sword known as Excalibur, which he draws.
They see him transform a wereboar into pure ice, then shatter the statue. Flamel remarks that he thought that Excalibur had been lost when Artorius King Arthur died. The twins, Scathach, and Flamel escape the shadowrealm rapidly after, shortly before the destruction of Hekate, the Yggdrasill, and the entire shadowrealm.
As they escape, Dee uses Excalibur to freeze the Yggdrasill, and Hekate, whose life and power is linked to the tree, transforms to ice as it does.
As this occurs, Dee is informed that Flamel and Scathach have escaped with the twins. In his rage, he shatters the Yggdrasill, which crushes Hekate into dust, killing her. At this point, they travel to Scathach's grandmother, the Witch of Endor also called "The Mistress of Air" , who teaches Sophie her magical secrets.
While they are there, Dee has found out that the prophecy in the Codex speaks of Sophie and Josh. He tempts Josh to join him, while practising necromancy and raising thousands of corpses to assault the Elders and Sophie with. Josh almost agrees, but at the last moment he realizes he will lose Sophie if he agrees, and distracts the necromancer long enough to escape with Scathach, Sophie and Nicholas using a leygate where lines of energy, or ley lines on the globe cross to escape to Paris, where the book ends.
The book ends with the conclusion that the Witch has survived and Dee is still searching. Perenelle smiles when she realizes that Nicholas, the twins, and Scatty are in Paris, where there are other Elders who can Awaken Josh. The Sphinx tells her that the end is coming, and Perenelle responds with, "This is only the beginning. The Book of Abraham is an actual book, but the prophecies described in the The Alchemyst are the fictional work of Michael Scott.
The prophecies describe the return of the Elders - a race of magically powerful beings that seek to return to power and rule the Earth - and contains a spell that will achieve just that. Nicholas Flamel is the protector of this book and seeks to ensure the Elders never get their hands on it.
When attacked by John Dee, the book is stolen. Luckily, Josh Newman manages to rip the two most important pages from the book - the Final Summoning, the one spell to summon the Dark Elders to take back Earth, and possibly raise Danu Talis Atlantis up from the waves.
