Plenty of benches. Bald eagles sometimes visible in tree tops. Water fountain near boat dock with faucet to refill water bottles. Some shaded parking areas. Plenty of goose poop. Fairly busy trail. Bike riders zooming by are probably the worst part of the walking experience. Bathrooms finally replaced but its a bit of a hill to the art center to get there.
Great paved trail! Really like the elevated view of the lake. Saw the bald eagle chicks in their nest, some deer, and great blue herons. Eaglets in the nest today. Short Lake trail side trip on dirt was well worth it.
Unbelievably crowded. Seems like a nice place to exercise but if you want a nice quiet walk in the woods, this is not it! Good after work walk. But usually crowded.
Wear your damn mask. Great trail for both walking and biking. Heavily trafficked, easy stroll or ride. This is okay, probably a good choice for a regular easy to access place to go for a run. It is highly trafficked, and after heavy rains can be significantly washed out in several places. Cons: high traffic, I felt a little creepy because I was always right be someone else. Also the higher ground above the lake was a mine field of goose poop. Use Navigator in the AllTrails app and join the other outdoor explorers who have completed this trail.
Shelley Lake Trail easy Length 3. Nice shady path around a lake, good for the whole family. Not too many hills but some side trails if you would like to make your route longer. Accessibility: There is a large paved parking lot at the start of the trail but there do not appear to be any designated accessible parking spaces or striped access aisles there.

Courtney Hummel. Vied of the bridge from the dock at Shelley Lake Park. Has shaded parts of the path and unshaded along with a solid path around the entire lake. The path is part of the total Raleigh Parks system. There are two places to park. There is also a nice art center and a small play area for kids off the main parking lot. About Us Donate. One of the nicest 2 mile walk around the lakes in Ralieigh NC Has shaded parts of the path and unshaded along with a solid path around the entire lake. July 2, The trail follows the northwest shore of the lake as it becomes more swampy towards the headwaters.
A short connector splits to the left and leads to street parking on Lakeway Drive. At the northern end of the lake, the trail turns right and crosses Mine Creek on a bridge. Go right to stay on Shelley Lake Loop. Heading south, the trails passes through a forested area before reaching some open fields near the lake.
At the south end of the lake, the trail heads up to cross the dam. Crossing the dam, Shelly Lake Trail turns right to finish up the loop.
The comfort station with restrooms and the boathouse are in this stretch between the dam and the start of the loop. Wildlife: In spring of , a pair of bald eagles Haliaeetus leucocephalus nested high in the trees along Shelley Lake.
The nest is very high up and hard to see clearly, but it was exciting to see the eagles here.
