What kind of ar 15 to buy

The rifle-length system will have the lowest case pressure during the extraction of the three systems. This system will have the most trouble-free performance of the three systems. It delays the extraction longest and allows the case pressure to drop to aid in the easy ejection of the spent case. I just wanted to preface this next section with that. Do you want it as short and portable as possible? Buy a pistol AR Many have carbine length gas systems.

These are the ultimate in portability, but consider that there will be lots of concussion! If you are going to buy a suppressor in the future, these builds will give you a compact, suppressed package.

Compact, loud, but lots of fun. Still hurty enough for self-defense. Do you want it to look like an M4? Buy a carbine with a pinned flash hider on a It will be light and very handy fighting machine should you need to use it for defensive purposes. A pinned flash hider is necessary to bring the overall length of the barrel to the legal inch mark. A solid all-around choice. Do you want a short package like an M4, but care more about durability and shoot-ability?

Buy a inch barrel with a mid-length gas system. This is a compromised system. It is a bit higher on theoretical reliability than the carbine, but less so than the rifle. If you want a jack of all trades to start with the mid-length 16inch AR This will be another excellent all-around shooter.

Do you want an M16 clone or a rifle high on reliability and muzzle velocity? Get a rifle length system. Typically these will come in 18 inch and 20 inch flavors. With the rifle length system we have arguably the most reliable AR15 of the weapon family. It also has the highest muzzle velocity, and it is one of the softest shooting variants of the three systems.

IF you want the nitty-gritty details of pressure, dwell time, army reliability tests, ect. Now that we have covered the gas systems, its time to decide your rifles goal: do you want tack-driving accuracy or a tough, long-wear fighting machine?

Poke you in the eye down a hallway this one can. Here we are going to touch on three popular barrel types. Chrome lined barrels will last a great many rounds before deteriorating.

Due to slight inconsistencies when applying chrome to the bore of a barrel, they are considered less accurate than other options. Keep in mind that the Marines use a chrome-lined barrel to hit man-sized targets at yards. These barrels can typically do 1. This option will have a long bore life and be more forgiving of less frequent maintenance. As the barrel erodes the match-grade accuracy will degrade to very good accuracy.

See ADCO firearms test here. This is the barrel you want if you value accuracy over barrel life. Typically capable of 0. Nitriding has more lubricity than chrome, it is harder than chrome, and does not add inconsistency to the thickness of the bore. This is a layer that is added both to the bore and outside of the barrel. These barrels are a great balance of accuracy and durability.

I would rank them between SS and Chrome lined. Nitrided barrels are becoming well established and they offer clean looks and good to excellent performance at a budget price. Everything has a bit of a trade-off. And how does not banning guns work…have you looked at the United States? Are you ok with you having to think about you and your loved ones safety every time they leave the house? Nice straw man argument. Guns are heavily-regulated, from manufacture to sale.

So, what specific regulations DO you really want? Regulations on guns just keep honest people honest. Criminals get their hands on any kind of gun out their. Read the CDC website on how many lives are saved annually due to someone protecting theirselves with a gun. If deaths per year are due to gun violence half that many are suicides.

But dont take my word for it. Check the CDC report on it. My whole point is. STOP blaming guns and start blaming criminals who get them. Stiffer penalties for ALL violent crimes should be mandatory.

Lets compare numbers of fatalities because of drunk driving. Does that mean we should ban beer? Or Cars???? The government will never take my right to defend myself, my family, or my home.

They or anyone else who wants to try will have to kill me to take mine away. I believe that without the second amendment. The first amendment would carry no weight. Because if we allowed ANY politician, especially someone like 44 Obozo to disarm us. We would lose the right to protect free speech and would become another Venezuela.. Your grandchildren are about eight times more likely to be killed by lightning than they are in a school mass shooting.

You obviously buy your game in the supermarket. And an AR fires no slower or faster than any other semi-auto rifle. Please become educated about a subject before spouting off on it. Possibly a chipmunk? In fact, I will argue you will have trouble finding the entry hole IF you actually kill the animal with it.

No right is absolute. I have 6 sons that are now or were in school. I believe that when i was young and someone brought a gun to school we worked on it in shop 8th grade , and we all had pocket knives.

No one shot anyone or stabbed anyone. We had guns in racks in our truck with a shotgun and rifle in it. We had every kind of gun within reason 50 cal or less and we didnt shoot anyone. Do you think its the disrespectful, video game playing, drug taking punk that think the world owes them. Or should we blame the parents and students for ignoring everyday behavior that is bordering on psychotic.

Lets blame the inanimate object. All my sons have ar15s some more than one. They have children in school, 3 served in the military and can drive tacks. They will say that their kids have gone over what to do in a shooting situation. Im zure the high school age boys would respond with some kind of offense to stop the shooter.

What should we do? Maybe if we deported 16 million illegal aliens, stop legalizing drugs, make parents responsible and get some balls with their kids we could say we tried. When the criminals go to buckshot and shotguns you will see the ar is weak close range, 12 ga. Make the people understand thsy are responsible for their actions. Stop whining about a system that is safer than you driving you child to school while your texting.

We have lost more kids to school shooting than any other modern country. We have lost more to texting and driving, drinking and driving, smoking, and many other ways. We are different than those countries and have freedoms that we have to protect from uneducated well doers. Love, peace and hope we all can get along. Probably a google stock photo. You need to find a new career. I have 3 Rocks, my buddy has 4, and another has one. Making drugs illegal worked it worked well enough to allow me to retires at 43 on Outlaw ARs!!

I bought a new CNC machine.. Drug laws work.. Wow, anti gun nuts. Hey, But it is okay for your Dem friends to support and profit from sex trafficking? Grow a set of balls and learn to cope. You and your wussy friends have made it illegal to discipline children.

Instead you medicate them. You are the problem. You caused this behavior and mental illness crises. Accuracy to me is high on the list of rating a rifle.

Did you graduate from High School? That set the stage for an explosion in AR sales. Anti-terror police forces began patrolling cities and transportation hubs, and the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq were covered intimately.

That higher visibility seemingly fed a desire among gun owners to get what the troops and cops were using. With encouragement from the gun industry, the AR grew popular not only among people who enjoyed owning the latest tactical gear, but also among recreational and competitive target shooters, and hunters. Many saw it as a pinnacle of firearms engineering — ergonomic, accurate, reliable. Production of AR-style guns has soared since the federal ban expired. In , , were made. In , the number was 1.

The organization does not provide sales data, nor does it have production estimates, but says that year's activity likely broke all records. Today, one of out of every five firearms purchased in this country is an AR-style rifle , according to a NSSF estimate. Americans now own an estimated 15 million ARs , gun groups say. Chandler is an unlikely AR enthusiast. He grew up outside Baltimore, a city plagued by gun violence, raised by parents opposed to firearms and was friends with kids whose lives had been torn apart by them.

For much of his youth he considered himself anti-gun. Then a well-to-do neighbor was shot in a home invasion. Chandler realized that his family had no weapon to defend itself, and decided to buy a gun when he got old enough.

When he turned 21 and began shopping, Maryland tightened laws in response to the December mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. That measure banned many types of semiautomatic rifles, so when Chandler eventually decided that he wanted an AR, he built one from scratch, adhering to the new restrictions.

On one of his recent visits to a gun range, Chandler showed what made the AR a cutting-edge gun when it was created, and one reason why it became so widespread. Pushing the gun's "takedown pins" with his fingers, he broke his gun down into its basic components, and within several seconds snapped it back together. This is why some people compare the AR to a car chassis, others to Legos or Mr. Potato Head. I figured the changes were enough for a repost to. It is good to re-visit this stuff.

I am on board with most of what you said, except for a few items. I have no use for fixed iron sights or plastic handguards. Also, the world of optics has been changing. If all you are looking for is a simple and durable red dot sight, there are plenty of options out there that cost less than the Aimpoint. Sometimes a lot less. You have enough experience and knowledge to separate good from bad and recognize a good deal.

My concern is for people who know next to nothing, and then get caught up in bad information and marketing hype. The front sight post is a good example of this. Is it ideal for magnifies optics? But is it … Read more ». Iron sights are a great thing to learn on for a healthy 18 year old with young eyes and very limited budget.

However, I assume your recommendations should be suitable for a broad range of people with widely varying experience levels, physical condition and eye health. Once you get a little older and your eyes start changing, iron sights become a major limiting factor. They are harder to use for a new shooter even with 18 … Read more ». I would love to get my hands on a spitfire for some testing, though. You are absolutely on point regarding helping people actually have fun at the range.

If sacrifices have to be made, a sighting system is not where I would be doing it. We can argue about handguards, triggers and buttstocks all day long, but these, largely, are not critical. A simple 1x prism scope will make all the difference in the world if you actually want to hit something.

For southpaw shooters looking to invest in their first AR rifle, what options, or path would you recommend to create an ambidextrous platform? Al, I shoot ARs left handed. It ejects on the left side. It may not be the most bombproof option on the market, but it fits me the best.

As far as controls, I just picked up an ambitious selector from Strike Industries and a left-side mag release from Troy. If I can help more, let me know. Good info. The bolt carrier group for the Stag would be specific to the Stag and have to be ordered from them I would guess? That is correct. I recently put a suppressor on my stag and had no gas in the face issues even knowing how overgassed it probably is.

A few mods there are simple though, which gets me to option number two… 2 Swap in some ambi or left-handed parts. Ambi charging handles are pretty common, … Read more ». Super info! Very much appreciated. At the moment, leaning towards a standard platform with the option 2 mods you mentioned above. As a predominantly left handed shooter, I disagree with using specialty parts.

I know I can pick up almost any AR on the planet and run it. If I became entrenched and relied on speciality parts I would be significantly less proficient with a random AR that I might be firing. Additionally, unless it is purely a range toy that the shooter is never ever possibly using for defense, shooting around barriers, or building clearing. Great article. I was wondering if you had any experience with or any thoughts on the Springfield Armory Saint line of ARs for a first time buyer. Hey, thanks for asking! It has a white strip that is much faster to pick up. Matt, this is a terrific write up and had this been around a few years ago I probably would have saved myself a ton of time spent browsing forums and Youtube! The carbine length is not that overgassed, but I would like to preserve longevity of the parts and not subject them to wear.

What are your thoughts as far as making that switch? Is it kind of moot since I have an H buffer? The carbine has system is pretty well worked out. Thank you for the post. As you said, it does seem to check all of the boxes, which leads me to ask what they did in order to get the price point down. Some input on accessories though, even though the application may be different. For weapon lights, I prefer the OWL as they focus on candela vs lumens. Optics depend on mission, expected engagement range and capabilities of the rifle.

In the service I had an eotech holographic with a g33 magnifier on an hk, an acog on an m4 and an lpvo x on an cqbr. Hey Austin, thanks for commenting.

It seems like a smartly-thought out design. As far as optics, you are definitely correct that they should always align to the expected use case. I think i have it narrowed down to the mossberg mmr pro chambered in. Hey Andrew, thanks for commenting. The Valkyrie is very specialized for competition and long range.

Well to be fair the choices for decent made relatively inexpensive ie not two grand or more are limited so when i found the mossberg and researched it it really stuck out. And why not go for. I also really like the design and the fact that the gun has a lot of room for anything I decide to put on it. Ballistically, the Valkyrie is superior for long-range precision. But, all things being equal in a non-panic-buying season, the costs of running the Valkyrie in ammunition and parts will be higher.
